Redefining “Normal”: Routines and Milestones at Home

< 1 min read

A physical impairment often means that standard developmental timelines no longer apply. Trying to force old routines into your new reality will only lead to frustration.

  • Ditch the Comparison Game: Stop looking at general developmental milestones on the internet. Your child now has their own unique roadmap. Focus on the goals set by your child’s medical and therapy team, and celebrate their individual victories—no matter how small they may seem to the outside world.
  • Adapt Your Environment: Look into mobility equipment and assistive tools early. Simple physical aids—such as shower chairs, specialized utensils, accessible clothing, or grab bars—can make daily routines significantly safer for your child and physically easier for you as a caregiver.
